~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ AND MOLOKAI ORGANIC COFFEE GROWERS' COOPERATIVE ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Moloka'i
Coffee Company has cultivated, processed, roasted and sold coffee from Moloka'i for many years. We started farming as the owner of a 500 acre plantation at Kualapu'u, Moloka'i, and now as a partner with Molokai Coffee Growers, a cooperative of Hawaiian organic farmers. Our partnership is committed to growing and bringing to you the best of Hawaiian coffees: MOLOKAI COFFEE. This site will provide useful information about our company, the Co-op, our coffees, and the beautiful island of Moloka'i.
Right now, the Co-op farmers (with about 300 acres) are busily transplanting mature coffee trees onto their farms. The transplant process was pioneered by Molokai Coffee Co. in 2003, and greatly reduces the time to full production. The trees being transplanted were formerly cultivated by us, in a 185 acre field located on the upper slopes of the Island. With new technology and tree spacing devloped at the University of Hawaii, these trees will cover 300 Co-op acres with the same quality coffee that has been produced on Molokai for over 10 years. The Co-op hopes to eventually transplant all these trees, and to have annual production of about 300,000 pounds of coffee.
Aloha,
The Moloka'i Coffee Co. and its Co-op Farmers
Moloka'i, Hawaii is the most traditionally Hawaiian of all the Islands: "A place where you won't find a single traffic light, and not a single building taller than a coconut tree." During the last century, as the other islands in Hawaii slowly moved away from a lifestyle dedicated to the resources of the land and the sea, Moloka'i somehow escaped trends toward new development, and remains almost untouched, as it was decades ago. Moloka'i is a place where time really seems to stand still, or at least moves more slowly. It is a place where the people often still fish, hunt, farm, and live together in a tight knit community of true Aloha. From the highest sea cliffs in the world to the longest white sand beaches in Hawaii, its natural beauty remains pristine. These unique island values and characteristics make Moloka'i special, and the Moloka'i Coffee Company unlike any other.
Our approach to coffee on Moloka'i is expressed in the following motto: A modern approach following traditional values. Our dedicated Moloka'i Co-op organic farmers of Native Hawaiian ancestry are a highly specialized group, advised by horticultural coffee experts from the University of Hawaii. While modern science and cutting edge equipment ensure unsurpassed quality and efficiency, the art and tradition of Moloka'i farming is very much a necessary part of our unique farm origins. Some Co-op farmers personally planted the original Moloka'i coffee seedlings over 20 years ago, and now farm their own organic versions on homestead family farms. This brings not only unique and valuable knowledge of Moloka'i soil, weather patterns, etc., but also a familiarity with each sub-field, in some cases each coffee tree! It is this combination of art and science, not only applied to farming, but to a series of meticulous steps in the processing and roasting stages, that brings you that splendid cup of Moloka'i coffee like none other in the world. Enjoy!
